Teatro Libero, founded in 1968 by Beno Mazzone, is housed in the ex-loggiato of the church of Santa Maria dei Miracoli in Palermo, in Piazza Marina, and runs various towns theatres in Sicily. It is an open venue, where the learning of theatre art has theoretic roots and acting performances. It has its own workshop, where shows for adults and children are created starting both from contemporary plays and classical ones under the direction of Beno Mazzone and Lia Chiappara.
The festival Incontroazione has become an important part of the international theatre season of Teatro Libero with theatre, dance, music and new circus.
The major European theatres, but also some names from USA, Japan, India and Australia, have proposed their works in Palermo. Libero theatre has been recognized as "Important centre of theatre production" from the Italian Department of Art for Cultural Activities. It is financed by Sicily Region.
