The Artistís Atelier

The Artist’s Atelier is part of a group of houses in the wooded saddle of breathtaking Capo Zafferano, looking southward directly onto a quiet bay and the Sicilian coast West to Cefalù. A long private staircase takes you directly down to the rocky bathing coast on crystal clear water, or you can walk along the road to one of the public beaches around the bay.

Capo Zafferano, with its unmistakable promontory, is a protected natural area just to the north of Bagheria – a suburb of Palermo famous for its 18th Century Baroque Villas – with an abandoned lighthouse at the end of a walk down the narrow road carved out of spectacular cliffs. The nearby fishing villages of Sant’Elia, Porticello, and Aspra all have different styles of fishing boats as well as their markets, pubs and restaurants from romantic to family-friendly. Alternatively, you can visit the ancient Greek ruins of Solunto with the Regional archaeological museum on-site, just across the bay.
With ample parking, the Artist’s Atelier is also an ideal base for a tour of Sicily, as it is only 10 minutes from the motorway despite its sensation of rural maritime calm. Once on the autostrada, the city of Palermo is only 20 minutes and its airport 30 minutes to the West and Cefalù a little over a half hour to the East. Both Agrigento and Catania are less than two hours’ drive.
The house (35 mq plus terraces) was built in the ‘60s and thoroughly re-done in 2011 as the summer home of a young artist (hence the name), who often paints on the cool, shady terrace facing towards the sea. The simple and practical interiors are reminiscent of the fishers’ homes in nearby Porticello, while carrying the owner’s very personal decorating touch to give an artistic flair. An additional terrace off the living-dining room is ideal for evening dining. Guests also have access to a shared laundry facility, the shared gazebo with its spectacular view of S. Elia across the bay as well as the small but refreshing swimming pool.
